Natural Toothpaste & Mouthwash: Recipes for Dental Health that Work!

Recent studies have shown that there is a far more significant connection between mouth health and body health than previously thought. While having a sparkling smile and good breath is a nice bonus, mouth health has been shown to impact brain function (including having a connection with Alzheimer’s), as well as being connected to pneumoniarheumatoid arthritisheart diseasehepatitis, and esophageal cancer!

While charcoal toothpaste may currently be all the rage (and you can add some into our recipe below), dental health is really more about gently removing plaque and fighting fungus and the bacteria that cause bad breath and build up. At Wild Creek Naturals, we’ve been making our own dental care products for years. Here are my favorite – super simple – recipes for All Natural Toothpaste, and All Natural Mouthwash that actually works.

So, just what’s in your mouthwash?

Starting your day with a swish of Marseille’s Remedy Thieves’ Oil mouthwash is a great way to fight bad breath, and maintain a healthy mouth. My favorite recipe is super simple, and uses only three ingredients!

Mouthwash should be strong enough to fight the bacteria and fungus that cause bad breath.

Surprisingly to many, mainstream mouthwashes are considered external use products only, and if swallowed could have catastrophic effects on health ranging from blindness to kidney failure.

I could go into its antioxidant properties, or how it stimulates your immune system increasing circulation, or how it’s basically more toxic to prokaryotic (bacteria) cells than eukaryotic (human) cells, etc, etc… but to keep it super duper simple: using this recipe daily will help eliminate halitosis and gingivitis that cause bad breath. And it feels great! Plus if a little rolls down your throat it’s not only NOT bad for you, it’s a bonus.

Marseille’s Remedy Natural Mouthwash Recipe

  • One teaspoon of filtered apple cider vinegar (white vinegar works well too)
  • One (or two) drops of Marseille’s Remedy thieves’-style oil
  • A little warm water
  • Swish and gargle for ten seconds. Simple and natural!

What’s in your toothpaste?

The basic function of brushing your teeth is to loosen and remove plaque from teeth, gums, and tongue. It’s important to understand that too much abrasion can remove enamel and weaken teeth, if it’s too stimulating it can damage mucous membranes and gums, weakening them and allowing infection to take hold.

Again, like mainstream mouthwashes, mainstream kinds of toothpaste are considered an external use product only. For instance, the main ingredient in toothpaste for sensitive teeth is Potassium Nitrate, or more commonly called Saltpeter. It’s an industrial fertilizer, the main ingredient in gunpowder and fireworks, and a serious denaturing salt that reacts with hemoglobin. It has also been rumored to cause impotence, just in case the fact that it’s in fertilizer isn’t enough to scare you off…

From synthetic ingredients to petroleum isolates, the idea that a product used in the mouth is somehow an external use product is frankly insane.

Unlike mainstream toothpaste ingredients, Marseilles Remedy thieves-style oil is the only “thieves” type oil blend that has been approved by Health Canada for internal use. We use the highest quality food grade essential oils, meant to be ingested. So – definitely safe to put in your mouth.

It’s easy to make your own natural hygiene products, and better for the environment too

It’s our belief that everyone can be empowered to make their own natural hygiene products with some simple ingredients widely available at every health food store. Because of this, we send out instructional flyers to every store carrying our products with simple, easy to follow recipes, including how to make your own natural toothpaste.

Making your own natural toothpaste not only saves money, but it also saves packaging so it’s better for the environment, and is absolutely better for your health than using a product (in your mouth!) that is intended to be for external use only. As for its effectiveness, the proof is in the pudding. Try it for a week, if your breath is fresher, and your teeth are cleaner, you’ll agree.
